Phle·bot·o·mist - (flĭ-bŏt'ə-mĭst)

n.

1. One who practices phlebotomy.
2. One who draws blood for analysis or transfusion.

I am now a Phlebotomist. What does this mean? Not only am I officially certified, (which I have been for 4 months) but I will be working and getting paid AS a Phlebotomist. YESSSSSSS....

This job pretty much fell into my lap. Thanks to Lydia Bos. (Bruce's Sister.) Love her! I was planning on working for the census for 4 months before I started school. I had pretty much given up on looking for a Phlebotomy job. The sad thing is, even though Phlebotomists are in high demand... they will NOT hire you unless you have had at LEAST 6 months of experience.

Lydia called me up one day. She told me that her old supervisor called her, offering her her old job and that she had to decline them because she didn't want to work as late as they wanted her to. They asked if she knew anyone who would be interested so she gave them my name. That's not the best part!! She had to convince them to hire me with no experience so she stuck her neck out, talked to her old manager AND supervisor and talked me up to the point that they reconsidered hiring someone with experience! They NEVER do that. They don't even hire people who have had 10 years of Plasma drawing experience. They look for experienced Phlebotomists who have worked in Hospitals and clinics.

The "They" that I am referring to is LabCorp. They are a company that does business with clients all over Utah. What they say to small doctors offices and hospitals is: If you do business with us, then we will give you a full-time Phlebotomist. That's pretty much the gist of it. So they do business with clients all over Utah, Nevada, California, etc. The place I will be working in is called "Circle of Life". It's an OBGYN clinic located in South Ogden.

It's such a nice place!! There's actually a spa on the bottom floor! The top floor is where all the fun stuff happens!! :) There are 8 different providers in this clinic so the Phlebotomist already working there just needs some extra help. The ONLY reason they considered me is because there's already another Phlebotomist working there. They felt that if they put someone experienced there then the two of them would clash heads. This way, she can train me how she wants me. When I went in for the interview they just kept telling me how this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and the experience is pretty much invaluable. I'll be doing 60 to 100 sticks a day! It's so awesome!!!

I'll work from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Mon. through Fri.! And get this!! At $10.91/hour! That may not seem huge, but new Phlebo's normally start out at $9.50/hour. If that was the pay they would have offered me, I would have had to turn them down because I wouldn't be able to save enough money.

All in all, this truly is an amazing blessing that fell into my lap at the exact time that I needed it! I'm so grateful for the way things worked out!! I'm a little intimidated and overwhelmed at the new-ness of it all! Lydia pretty much spent an entire day with me giving me all the information I'd need to know. I took 4 pages of notes and was a little blown away! Hopefully I'll get the hang of it quickly! I'm excited though!! Very very excited!!! :)

That is all. :)
